It kinda seems like void and shadow are redundant elements.

Not at all. There's a shadow enemy, the Shadowbat. Aura, the fourth party member is a Void elemental which means that he only has a weakness (and strength) against other Void elementals.

I understand that in your game they are distinct elements. That was my point. It seems weird to have two distinct elements that seem so similar. Most games would just combine them into one.

After all, what is shadow but the absence of light? It's a lack of something, just like void.

I see what you mean, but in this case void deals with a lot more space/time sort of things whereas shadow is more like death and darkness magic. Most games tend to do things like that linked together such as Diabolos from the Final Fantasy games. I was tempted to call void magic time magic at one point, but I wanted it to seem a bit more all encompassing.
